I had purchased a ROAD ANGEL 6000 here in Australia (because of it’s supposedly great red light camera database) - which crashed or froze no fewer than 5 times over 3 days!

After looking around at products such as the Garmin Nuvi, I found myself won over by the Mio C310. Why? Well, because not only does the C310 have accurate turns (the RoadAngel 6000 was usually 100 - 150 metres off for turns in residential areas, and around 350 metres off a freeway!), but it has several “themes” for the look of the maps - both day & night mode - and you can have the backlight automatically dim for night mode, as well as have night mode switch on at a certain time that is calculated by the navigator itself!

I personally hate the look of the night mode presentation, so I chose a different daytime “theme” that turns on automatically at a much reduced brightness level.

The red light camera database seems to be pretty good, and the best feature is that not only can you easily add your own red light cameras etc to it’s database, but you can also choose which way the camera faces or covers (forward, backward, both ways, or all directions!). You can also specify whether it’s a red light camera, speed camera (you can set the speed for it), mobile speed camera etc…

The RoadAngel 6000 claimed to do all this, but in reality would only give an alert when you went through a red light camera intersection ONE WAY and not the other (where the camera would cover both lanes of traffic either way).

So it has an MP3 player built in… Consider that a bonus, but hey, if you were serious about an MP3 player you would buy an iPod or something similar wouldn’t you?

So far, the software has seemed to be pretty stable (no crashes yet), and the look of the maps - both 2D and 3D - are pretty reasonable and a big improvement over the previous 2 releases. I originally had a Mio 136, which had a reasonable red light camera database, but 1 year out of date maps - before Mio went over to the SENSELESS maps v3 (which didn’t have any red light camera points in it’s database whatsoever… Oh, sorry - it had ONE), so these v3.2 maps are again a big improvement.

Considering the $350 price difference between the $900 RoadAngel 6000 and the $549 Mio C310, it wasn’t too hard to choose… and I’m happy with it. A little bit of getting used to in regards to the menu interface, but that’s always the case when you buy a new unit.

All in all, well done Mio…!
