I love my Garmin eMap. My wife thinks I’m nuts. This little device, loaded with a memory card and the maps from a MapSource CD (memory card and maps are extra purchases) makes this one of the BEST GPS units I’ve seen.

First, the unit is small, lightweight, and locks on to a signal in about 10-15 seconds.

Second, without the data card, the map data is still great. All major roads are shown, and even some minor roads. Don’t count on your suburban streets being listed, but if you are lost, you can at least aim for a major road.

Third, with the extra data card and maps, every street imaginable can be loaded onto the device. I purchased the 96 Meg card, and I fit all of Minnesota, 1/2 of Wisconsin, part of North Dakota and Illinois on my GPS. This amount of data is fantastic.

When you purchase this, you really should purchase the extra PC connector. This will allow you to install updates to the GPS software.

The case is rugged, well built, and fits nicely in your hand. The only color I’ve seen is purple, but it is an attractive device. The backlight easily lights the entire screen at night. My unit has lasted for several months on just 2 “AA” batteries, when used every few days. Battery life is certainly acceptable with this device.

The only downside is that this isn’t waterproof, but if you’re planning on taking this in the rain, you probably need a different GPS anyway. This GPS is directed more toward streets and driving rather than hiking.

Overall, I like this GPS, and I’d buy another if I had the need.
