I purchased my TomTom August 2006, when I got a job as a local courier for a delivery company. I simply could not have done this job without TomTom. I really like the fact that I never had to enter the address of my current location; I only needed to enter my destination and I had TomTom programmed to get me there thru the fastest route.
Worked like a charm.
This device was very reliable. The only time I lost my signal was when I was downtown and was surrounded by tall buildings. Poor TomTom couldn’t see. The signal would come and go, and each time the signal came back, TomTom kept changing the route plan and had me driving around in circles. The way I got around this was to click “details” when TomTom gave me a route plan, and memorize or write down where I needed to go, then ignore when TomTom changed the route. The signal would only be lost for a couple of seconds. I think this would happen with any GPS, so that’s not a flaw with TomTom.
Once I got a clear shot of the open skies, TomTom was back to his old reliable self. I never used any of the mounting parts that came with the device. It is small enough to fit in my dash where my speedometer is. I was able to angle it to one side so it wouldn’t cover up my speedometer. This made it easy to take down and hide in my glove box or under my seat. I didn’t want anyone to steal TomTom, since he’s a hot comodity.
I did have a couple of small issues with TomTom which were:
(1)If there were 2 Jackson Street addresses, TomTom would only find one. This was why I needed to purchase a key map as a back up. If I needed to be at the other address, I would have been screwed if I did not have my key map. To get to the other address, I would enter in a street name with a cross street at an intersection, and TomTom got me there as usual.
(2)TomTom would attempt to look for addresses in chronological order. My husband and I visited New Jersey in Sept 2006, and entered 101 Pierce St for our hotel. TomTom led us straight to a fire station. The good news is that he got us from the airport to Pierce St. A simple fix was to turn around and drive 1/8 a mile in the opposite direction on Pierce St, and we got to our hotel with no problems. To get back to our hotel whenever we went out, I entered the cross section of Pierce & Grandview, and TomTom took us straight to the hotel, every time.
All in all, this was a very good buy. The screen was big enough to view easily, and as long as I kept the device in “driver view”, it would show me driving on the map. It also colored the road I was on, a dark brown which made it easy to see which highway I needed to be on when approaching an exit that split. TomTom would tell me to “take the exit Right”, but I learned to rely on what I saw on the map over what was being said. Take the exit Right could mean travel South when I needed to go North.
I bought my TomTom at BestBuy for $529 but found it for less at CompUSA for $399. Best Buy did a price match and refunded $119 back to my credit card, so shop around before buying.
