The eTrex Vista has a lot of good features, but when I read reviews on Epinions some people were concerned about battery life and reception. It was still the best GPS I could find for my needs, so I bought one. So far I am pleased beyond my expectations.

Battery life. I bought some rechargeable AA batteries just for the Vista, but so far the original alkaline batteries are still good. They’ve been in the unit about three weeks. During that time I’ve done about 3 hours of downloading maps (which is done with GPS turned off). I spent an afternoon wandering around St. Augustine, FL, with the GPS on almost all the time, and have used it several other times. As far as I can tell, battery life is fine, especially if you turn off GPS when you don’t need it.

Reception. If you don’t have a clear view of the sky, reception is going to be impaired with any receiver. But I’ve been very happy with the Vista. Almost everywhere I’ve been, I’ve been able to get enough satellites - even when it was sitting on the car seat next to me!

Other. The Vista is a great unit with a lot of features. The only complaint I have is that it takes a long time to download maps into it - about 45 minutes for 15 MB. But that’s only a minor hassle.
