OK, my wife had 2 items on her Santa list: new PDA to replace her ancient one, and GPS unit for her car, as she gets lost easily.
Initially I thought I would have to spent at least $1000, but then I learned about Ique. $300 would buy a new one (refurbished) with maps, unlock code and auto kit on ebay.
So, I bought one ique 3600 for my wife (she didn’t see it yet!). I liked it so much, that I bought a second hand ique 3600 one for myself on ebay ($200)! Actually, if you have unlock codes on one garmin GPS, you can unlock the maps for one more garmin GPS unit, which worked for me on the second Ique (directions are on the garmin site, that has excellent support, BTW).
I am new to Palm OS as I used Windows CE in the past. It is very easy to learn and use Palm OS. Some people say that the OS 5 is not as stable as it used to be in version 4 and below, but how would I know? I did come across to have to do a few soft resets, but that is not a major problem and you loose no data.
The GPS part works as advertised. As I own another portable garmin GPS unit, I am perfectly aware that the satellite lock can take some minutes, and one has to have unobstructed sky view. People new to GPS may not aware of this though. External antenna could help in that regard.
The tracking and routing works very good. The route may not always be the most optimal in rush hours, since the GPS does not know what roads are congested, but will always take you to the point of interest.
The folks on the PDAstreet.com warned me that the antenna in Ique 3600 brakes sometimes, and it is improved on the Windows-based Ique M5. So far, so good. Ique M5 is much more expensive than 3600 though and I’m sad that Micro$oft dominates over Palm these days.
As other folks said, watch you battery. However, if you lower the light output, use the GPS sparingly on battery, setup GPS in battery saving mode and WASS off, you should be good for a few hours. BTW, the battery will exhaust even if not used in 1-2 weeks.
Edit: auto navigation kit is a must, don’t get one without!
