I got my explorist 500 and was all excited to start using it. I charged it up and started exploring the default map that came installed on it. The default map was pretty decent, having most major highways and a few major streets on it.

I hooked it up to my computer to load some maps onto it using Mapsend Directroute. My computer recognizes the device, but for unknown reasons I can’t access the memory on the device or the SD card in the device. I figure this isn’t a problem, I’ll load maps onto a SD memory card externally (which requires taking out the battery, a difficult task). I load up the SD card and put it back in the device, but then the 500 displays the error “unit currently contains no map initiating map upload”.

After trying for several hours and searching the internet for help, I still couldn’t get the 500 to work again. I talked to Magellan support for a few hours, and they told me I have to send it to them to fix it. They mentioned that they’ve never heard of this problem, but after a quick search of the internet for the error message I found several people having this problem. At this point my frustration level has reached it’s limit, and I decide that I no longer want anything to do with this device or this company.

I will never purchase another Magellan device, and I hope you do the same.
