I recently took a Garmin StreetPilot ColorMap with me on two trips of about 200 km each (from Ottawa to Montreal, and from Ottawa to Kingston). Both are along major highways. Along the way, I was impressed at the unit’s ability to accurately position my vehicle (within 5 meters) and also estimate its speed.

I had loaded the highway maps for my trips from the MapSource CD also available from Garmin, as well as the MetroGuides for urban areas.

However, the GPS does not function well where I could use it most: dense urban areas. This makes the MetroGuides pretty useless. Tall buildings in downtown Montreal would block reception and make the GPS inoperable. I wasn’t impressed… It’s in situations like this that GM’s ONSTAR system makes a lot of sense.

Also, unlike other navigation units, the StreetPilot cannot automatically figure out optimal routes from the starting and destination points. If you give it a route before you head off, it will display directions on screen, but this is a long process that shouldn’t have to be done by the user, in my opinion.
