I purchased the Garmin eTrex at a local Wal-Mart because it was on sale for $110 in November of 2000. It’s my first GPS, and I’ve really had a lot of fun and gotten a lot of use out of it.
The software is intuitive and easily hackable if you know how to hexedit. I’ve added a few custom messages and changed a few things around. I bought the power/computer cable from a 3rd party supplier and it works fine. I can upload waypoints onto a blank map, and look at trails and paths and whatever. Lots of useful information for every waypoint.
Battery life is fantastic, I easily get a few months out of a fresh set of Alkalines, using it for a few hours total per week.
The backlight is bright and makes the display viewable in any lighting conditions, while not heavily straining the batteries. The 4-level grayscale LCD is pleasant to look at and very easy to read. The placement of buttons might be awkward for some people, but for most people its very convenient.
The case feels extremely solid and sturdy. I’ve dropped mine several times and it suffered no damage at all. In fact once I dropped it off my second story porch onto the lawn below and it was still on and tracking its position when I recovered it. A truely rugged tool for whatever punishing missions you go on.
The more recently introduced models of the eTrex are neat, but none of them are really worth the added price and reduced battery life.
Even if you have no REAL use of a GPS, this one is priced right to make a great fun toy.
