I purchased this unit in the spring of 2000 and haven’t regretted it once. This is an excellent product for what you pay. It was a deal two years ago, and its still a deal. This unit tracks extremely well, especially considering its size. Sure, it will lose track inside buildings and under VERY heavy cover, but any GPS would. I find that the reciever in this unit tracks great even under more adverse conditions like heavy cloud and tree cover. It tracks in situations that my old 3/8 channel simply would not. And, if the conditions aren’t ideal, it usually just takes longer to get a hard lock on the sattelites. The battery life from 2AA’s is very satisfactory (~30 hrs.). The display and buttons are easy to learn and I find the screen progressions and layout to be very intuative. I would say that the only real drawback of the base model is memory capacity, which is the ability to store more waypoints and tracks. However, it is likely that for most people this unit is all that you’ll ever need. I can see owning this unit for a lifetime, and always getting the job done. Not to mention that this unit is waterproof to IPX7 standard which means it is basically submersible in up to 1 meter of water for 30 minutes. I would encourage anyone to buy this unit be it a first time user, or even someone who is more advanced. There is the ability to purchase a PC data cable and upload/download information to/from the unit. The original e-trex doesn’t have some of the more fancy add-ins than other members of its family, but I will just say this. If all you want to do is be able to accurately tell your position on the earth’s surface, mark that point, and return to it, the e-trex original is all you’ll every need, and at the best price too.
