After owning several Palm Pilots, filling them up, finding that my 4,500 addresses (literally) slow down the processor and finding that I often needed a couple of other functions other than just a PDA, Garmin comes through again with another winner!
I’ve owned several Garmin GPS units, traveled with them throughout the U.S., Central America and in France, they’ve always been bulletproof and reliable. (I can’t say this for many of the competitors…)
Yes, I too had problems with this type of unit. Primarily I’ve had problems with mine losing data without warning and finding that you have to sync it with the computer to reload the data. It’s been somewhat of a problem with mine, but knowing Garmin (after having purchased at least five GPS units from them) they stand solidly behind their products.
Oh yes, you may have to wait to get a live person on the phone line…typically 5-10 minutes or so, but it’s worth the wait as I’ve always found them to go above and beyond, going the second mile for me. They have handled warranty matters and repairs a few times for me, each time without a hitch and the experience was great. It’s obvious they really care about customer service, which is first rate.
A couple of things I don’t like about this Garmin unit is that the battery life is very limited. You won’t go a full day with it, in fact, my experience has been about an hour while using the backlight (which you’ll typically want to use, as the unlit screen is fairly hard to read). Also, the Garmin mounts could use considerable improvement. I’ve used their Etrex mounts, of almost every configuration and they were at the other extreme of what I have come to expect from such an incredible company and line of navigation instruments. Not to be outdone, when I made a complaint regarding a mount I had, they sent me another type of mount at no charge! I have to hand it to them, they indeed take the effort to help folks.
The neat thing about the IQue 3600 is you have a GPS, with voice prompts, a voice recorder, a PDA and probably some other things I’ve not discovered in it as yet, all in one really neat package. Garmin is fixing the matter of my data getting lost, and knowing them, it’s going to be right when it gets back to me.
Would I recommend it to others, yes!
