I purchased my GPS III+ online, about 18 months ago. Primaraly purchased for marine use, I very quickly discovered it’s usefulness in my automobile…a place I spend a great deal more time in than a boat ! As a salesperson, this little hummer really helps me find my way around to appointments at addresses I’m unfamiliar with ! It is also an excellent aid to mileage tracking for income tax reasons, as it has very accurate odometer functions too ! I love this thing, and passengers ALWAYS comment on it when seeing it for the first time.

GPS systems (Global Positioning Systems) utilize a government-owned constellation of satellites, to triangulate your exact position on this planet, as well as a host of other useful information. There is NO subscription fee for this service, just the cost of the equipment.

I was particularly attracted to it’s "moving map" feature, something somewhat "new" to GPS units when I was purchasing. (older units used only a display of numbers and dots….not very easy for the layperson to utilize) The moving map shows you what street/freeway/highway you’re on, most streetnames (More if you’ve loaded a local detailed map in from the CD-ROM)

Additionally, this unit can be attached to your PC, and you can actually download VERY detailed local streetmaps into it as well as the resident information on all national highways, railways, etc. This does require an optional CD-ROM ($99.) as well as optional PC cable (approximately $25.) which both greatly add to this unit’s functionality. A car power cord for your lighter socket is worthwhile too ($19.95). I recommend these accessories wholeheartedly.

It requires some serious "couch time" to learn it’s buttons, and set the unit up to suit individual tastes. There are numerous user-selectable fields of information including sunrise-sunset, average speed, speed, time-of-day, waypoints, and on and on. It’s been interesting to watch the days get longer, in a matter of miles, as we’ve traveled south from Olympia Washington, to Portland Oregon, and points southward on our trips.

The time spent is not unreasonable however, as this is NOT a toy, and is a very sophisticated piece of equipment.

It is of the highest quality, waterproof, and I especially appreciate the mineral-glass display window which defies scratches. The green backlight feature matches the dashboard lighting in my 4Runner to a "T", and I’ve even manufactured a special mount for it in my car, offering a semi-permanent place for it….I use it all the time.

Shop on-line for yours….there are several reputable firms dealing solely in GPS on the internet….most of them discount the price, and the shipping generally is MUCH cheaper than sales tax if you buy locally.
