I prefer the c340 for navigation functions. - Garmin StreetPilot® 2820 Car GPS Receiver I bought this to replace a StreetPilot c340, because I required a Track Logging function with over 3000 points. ...
I bought this GPS to replace one that was built into my last car (which I really miss).
I first tried the TomTom 910 but had real quality issues with the brand, so I decided to give Garmin a try and I’m really happy I did.
First, The maps are outstanding. I am a real believer that NAVTEQ maps are simply the most accurate. No GPS will send you the way that you would have gone yourself 100% of the time but NAVTEQ comes much closer than their competitors.
Second, this thing is built like a brick. Al the things work the way that they should without making multiple attempts to get the Bluetooth phone connection work.
Third, I just hooked up the optional FM traffic module, which was extremely easy. It works fantastic. It connects and update the traffic info all by itself in real time and combines the results with the navigation in progress. This is a much better system than the TomTom which relies on your cell phone connection and then incorporates the data in a much more elementary fashion.
Besides FM traffic, this unit supports XM Satellite Radio with traffic & weather in larger markets (additional hardware cost & subscription required).
In the beginning I have to admit that the older design of the Garmin was it’s least appealing aspect, but I have to admit that it grows on you. In addition, I have really started to enjoy the dedicated buttons instead of 100% touchscreen for basic controls.
The only downside (for me) to the 2820 is the fact that Garmin wants $350 additional for European maps on top of the $800 which I already spent for the unit. TomTom includes North American, Canadian & European maps with their 910 unit. For most people this is not a consideration, but for me it is a necessity. All in all, this is one of my most satisfying electronic purchases in quite a while.
