I’ve had my Vista for about three months now - I’m not impressed. The reception is decent on a clear day where there are no trees in sight. But when any clouds or foliage are overhead, the thing can’t maintain a fix half of the time. It’s a shame - I really love the layout, size and display. They are all done very nicely. But because Garmin skimped on the antenna, the reception is terrible on all but the nicest days in an open area.

I’ve had other GPS’s that could get a lock on sattelites from inside of my house, but they all had quad-helix antennas. If you really want a Garmin, go for the GPS Map 76 or wait for the Rino to come out. They both have quad heilx antennas and the same capabilies, plus some. But they lack the digital compass. I don’t know if the Magellan Platinum has the Q.H. antenna, but you might want to check if you are really looking for a digital compass. Either that or check out:

http://www.navitrak.com - that GPS has a built in compass AND uploadable USGS topo maps in addition to 1 meter satelite photos. I have ordered one, so after I field test it, I’ll write a review. But it’s a bit on the expensive side at $1000+ dollars.
