I received this gps as a gift and ended up taking it back to get a unit with external connections. This gps is a great little piece of equipment if you are using it fot the right applications. The map data will give you a proximity to locations and allow you to track really well. Waypoint marking is really easy and you can add a lot of marks. The compass is a great feature of this unit. I also liked the temperature / barometric pressure features as well.

I personally however wanted a gps for use while boating and road trip travel. This gps lacked detail that I wanted and I was already prepared to pay extra for the detail I felt I needed. I would also be utilizing a 12 v connection in both applications to plug the gps into and conserve batteries. With that stated the explorist did not fit what I felt I needed.

The major downfall of this gps is its inability to download additional information into it. This is unfortunate since magellan designed such a nice little unit. One other thing to consider is battery consumption. It will go through quite a few batteries(especially with any backlight use). For the price of it though it may still be a gps outdoors oriented people should at least have look at.
