Overall, I am very satisfied with the Mio 310X. This is the third GPS product that I have owned and find it to also be the best.
I started out in 2003 with the Delorme Earthmate for Laptop and was very happy with that product even though it had many shortcomings. I upgraded in 2005 to a Garmin Ique 1620 PDA gps and found that to be much better than the Delorme but still had routing, mapping and reception issues but generally worked well. Biggest problem was slow acquisition times and lost signals.
The Mio 310X has the lastest SirfStar 3 chip which proclaims to have the best signal reception. I have found that to be true. I am able to easily get reception in my home which was impossible for the others. On the road it has been flawless. Very strong and fast aquisitions.
Mio uses TeleAtlas maps which are not supposed to be as good as Navteq(which is used by Garmin, and Magellan). For the areas where I live and travel, NY, Long Island, and PA, I have found the maps to be more complete than my Garmin 2005. I understand that new map updates for the Mio will be available, for a price ,in Spring of 07.
Like any electronic device, there is a certain learning curve associated with these products. If you think that you can open the box, plug it in an plan a 1000 mile trip, forget it. I charged the unit and spent several hours playing with the features, learning the menus and setting my defaults. I believe that most people will be able to use the unit if they spend some time learning it first. I don’t believe that this unit was any easier or harder to learn than my other two.
I spent much time researching for my latest gps and realized that I wanted a unit with the Sirfstar3 chip, a bright screen, not too bulky but having at least a 3.5 in display and the ability to update maps. Also, price was a big consideration. The Mio fits this bill. If you want a solid but basic gps for an excellent price this is it!
