I was very excited to try out the 201 forerunner when I first got it. I must say that it is not as accurate as I would like. Maybe I’m being overly picky, but when I did an out and back 10 mile run, the out distance was about a tenth of a mile off from the back distance. Probably not the biggest deal, but it confirms that I won’t use the forerunner to pace myself during a race or use it to do speed work. When I do mile repeats I want to be sure that I’m as close to a mile as possible. If I’m off by 5 to 10 seconds, that’s unacceptable to me. It may not be a big deal to others, but I’m picky.

Another small complaint is that the unit does not hold or display a constant pace very well. The pace will fluctuate about half a minute to a minute per mile. It could be that my pace is not completely constant, but I have little doubt that the display does not show my true pace. I end up doing the mental math when I hit each mile and just calculate my average pace.

Overall it is a good training tool, but it is not everything that I hoped it would be. I think that I would spend about $100 on it if you can find it for that price. Otherwise just invest in a good pair of shoes and a race registration.
