Good Value & Compact - Navman iCN 530 Car GPS Receiver I bought this unit from my local Tesco Extra store because I work there so I get staff discount, and I'd also save...

My odometer broke and I started looking for an alternative. After reading the review by tekkster I purchased a Navman 510. If you want a perfect technical overview read his review.

For 329 dollars, the Navman’s expandable memory and full accessory kit including software was a bargain. Note: this unit comes with no memory and you can’t operate it without an SD card. 15 dollars 128MB

The Navman 510 is my very first GPS unit and it took me about 2 hours to figure it all out including downloading updates from the internet. The only thing I wasn’t able to figure out was downloading the U.S Basemaps which I still can’t figure out if they exist. The desktop software provided says basemaps are not available. On the Navman website they say they don’t have any for Canada but it doesn’t say anything about the U.S.

To have an onboard navigation system equal to a mobile Mapquest without a monthly fee is cool. My favorite feature is POI. From current location you can find a POI (Place of interest) closest to you. Example: you need gas–this unit tells you how far to a gas station and gives you multiple options the same for Hotels, shopping centers, Hospitals Etc.

From any place in Georgia I can tell it go home and it will give me a route or I can type in an address and get directions.

At first the sensitivity setting for the routing engine sucked. Then I started resetting the unit after each modification and Walla it worked great. You can select between a woman or a man to call out your instructions.

Pros: No monthly fee, Beautiful display, Great toy, small and light weight.

Cons

Can’t modify screens.

Font size over sized and can’t be modified so you have to select from multiple street locations without being able to read important information.

No Odometers. (I would like to see two trip odometers.)

From normal map view you can’t view all the trip 4 screen displays, you have to go into a back menu to view all the 4 screen displays.

If you decide to use the Max speed alarm, an alarm goes off every time you lose satellite, so you end up not using it because it’s annoying.
