7/2/03 Update: We have received the replacements, and they work great. Though I’ve only had the chance to check them on flat ground at a range of about 1 mile, the units worked perfectly. The radios worked fine, with one unit having just a touch of static (it could have been interference from another source). I think the more expensive of the Motorola FRS’s are still better radios, but the Garmins aren’t too bad.

The position reporting works well also, giving the contact name, distance, and bearing. GPS aquisition is rapid, and it usually acquires 5 or more satellites very quickly.

I guess we should have waited to buy. The GPS functions worked great. Satellite acquisition was fantastic, and navigation around the screens is pretty intuitive once you get the hang of the 5 way cursor.

The radios were almost no-shows, though, being out performed by $15 Motorola’s. That left the neatest function, the “Position Reporting”, unusable, as the signal is sent using the FRS radio.

In fairness to Garmin, they say they had a bad batch of transmitters. I got the RMA the same day requested, and sent them out today. Let’s see how long it takes to get them back, and if they work well.

Garmin seems like a great company. They make quality GPS units. I’ve got a GPS III that dropped in a mud puddle, was run over by a truck, and it was three hours later when it was pulled out of the muck. It still works great.
