I compared the Garmin Line with the Magellan Line - Garmin eTrex series is much smaller and lighter than equivalent Magellan (or other brand)handheld GPS receviers and the screen size is almost the same (slightly smaller in one direction). Considering that you have to carry a GPS receiver a lot when using it to navigate, size does matter!

The eTrex Vista is feature packed with electronic compass and barometer/altimeter as well as extensive GPS features. Allows storage of 24 MB of data and downloading of maps. Easy to use. Although the vast array of features is daunting at first, the interface is generally intuitive and logically consistent, making it progressively easier to master as what you learn with one feature transfers to the next.

The base maps that come with the unit are not bad, but I haven’t been impressed by the add on software/maps you can buy. Some are VERY expensive and offer limited coverage, with an additional significant fee to unlock other coverage areas. Others (more reasonably priced) don’t add much detail to the base maps. If you’re looking for Topo maps, consider Map Tech as well as Garmin’s Map Source (neither are cheap, but Map Tech offers smaller scale maps and many other features).
