The eTrex Legend stood out among the other GPS receivers due to its reasonable price (~$160 US), large memory for maps (8MB), and included PC interface cable.

I intended to use the receiver mostly for hiking and mountain biking, with occasional car navigation. It’s worked great so far: reception in clear meadows is as good as 12 ft, breaking up under heavy tree cover (to be expected, really). The display is very clear, with 4 shades of gray to give good contrast.

My complaints revolve around the PC interface cable: serial ports are on their way out. My laptop (HP Pavilion) does not have a serial port, under the assumption that most peripheral devices are using FireWire or USB. So, to connect the eTrex to my laptop I had to buy a USB-Serial converter ($40). I would like to see the eTrex sold with the option of a USB or serial cable, or at a lower price with the cable sold separately.

Finally, the eTrex offers a multitude of features, with only a few input mechanisms. So getting around the interface can require some patience.
