I bought a Vista for hiking/backpacking and in-car navigation. On a recent backpacking trip, the Vista performed well. It would lose signal reception in the trees but would then lock on in a clearing right away. The high-resolution display is sharp and detailed and the backlighting works well (but eats the batteries). The altimeter is accurate to within 10 feet and is a nice feature for outdoor use.

For in-car navigation, there are better choices. Without an external antenna, placement of the receiver in a car is vital. That coupled with a small screen (for portability) makes it difficult to use from a distance. The lack of auto-routing, and driving directions, makes the Vista a lesser choice for in-car navigation too but you have to pay close to $500 for a GPS V if you want something of comparable size with auto-routing. The GPS V also lacks some of the features that are nice to have for outdoor use (electronic compass and barometer altimeter).
