The eXplorist 210 is a sensitive and compact handheld GPS receiver. The layout of the controls allow right- or left-hand operation. When turning the unit on under open sky, it finds enough satellites (12 is not unusual) for accurate 3D positioning within a minute. The receiver is sensitive enough to usually lock onto 4 or so satellites inside a wood structure house, though setting the receiver near a window will speed the process. Under open sky, accuracy to within 16-20 feet is typical. The basic map contained in the GPS is pretty good down to larger county roads, but one of the MapSend software products (Topo 3D USA or DirectRoute) is needed for more detail. The Topo 3D USA maps are very detailed and, as far as I have found, very accurate. I understand both software use the same maps from NAVTEQ, but I don’t have any experience with DirectRoute. The monochrome display has certain advantages over the color screen of the 500LE: it is less sensitive to sunlight washout, the reddish back light is easier on the eyes at night, and the back light can be turned off to conserve power. Transferring maps to the GPS is pretty easy, but it is important to follow the procedure in the instructions. I have had no problems.
