I have owned a Garmin GPS II, then a GPSIII, which I traded in for the III+ under a manufacturer’s buy-back program. All have been great units - full-featured and easy to configure - and I have little to add to the other reviews, except that if you don’t need a GPS now, just wait until the technology improves and prices fall in the next year or so.

If you do need a GPS now , the Garmin III+ will do nicely, except for these minor shortcomings:

1. As another reviewer noted, this model is short on memory for loading your own maps. I have not tried this myself, but it also involves some expense to buy the CDs and the interface cable.

2. The built-in basemap is OK, not super-accurate, but already seems to stress the Garmin’s processor when you try scrolling the map - there is an annoying pause where the display blanks out before "catching up". Try before you buy and you will see what I mean!

3. The display is monochrome, which is certainly acceptable for now, but I would guess that color displays become the norm within the next couple of years. Already some cheaper GPS models (e.g. one by Magellan) sport color displays which make distinguishing rivers, roads and borders much easier, especially while driving.
