Overall, I’m happy with my purchase of the Garmin StreetPilot 2620, but the unit isn’t as flawless as Garmin would have you believe. I originally purchased the unit because I drive quite a bit for work and I was planning a long drive for a family vacation to Canada. I chose the 2620 over the 2610 since it had all the maps pre-loaded and that was one less thing I had to do before my trip. I also liked the fact that this unit included “Via’s” since we were planning on making a few stops along the way.

On the trip, the unit performed mostly as expected. The unit navigates well using the base maps and the detail maps contained most everything I was looking for. A nice feature that came in handy was the detour feature. On one trip from Toronto to Niagra Falls, we encountered an accident on the highway that blocked all lanes. Instead of sitting in traffic, I was able to pull off the highway and navigate the back-roads to get to my destination.

During this trip, I had two problems with the unit. The first was when I was trying to find a Winery in Canada - the unit sent me to the back of the vineyard among the grape vines instead of the visitor’s center. The second was on our return trip when we tried to enter two Via’s into the route. The unit did not calculate either correctly. In fact, I have yet to get the Via feature to work correctly. This is unfortunate since this feature is one of the reason’s I purchased this unit over the Magellan.

Since that trip, I have used the unit fairly extensively. For the most part, the unit works well. However, I have experienced more than one occasion where the routing was wrong. The unit tends to be slow giving directions when navigating through quick turns (left then right, etc). It’s easy to pass your road while the unit is trying to set up the next voice command. The unit will also tend to lose it’s signal if you are driving in a big city with lots of tall buildings around. However, the most frustrating thing is when the unit gets “lost” and tells you make an obviously incorrect turn. Then as soon as you make the turn, it tells you that you are off-route (despite the fact that the unit told you to make that turn).

All-in-all, I’m glad I made this purchase. If I had to do it all over again, I would most likely still choose the Garmin over the Magellan, but I would probably choose the StreetPilot 2610 and save the extra money. If you are new to GPS (as I was), I think you will find them to be very helpful. However, just be aware that GPS isn’t flawless and even with WAAP enabled, the unit isn’t as exact as you would expect it to be (especially in urban areas).
