Using the Magellan XL for the first time was like learning to walk again, comparing of course to my older Meridian series gps. But through reading, tinkering and help from Magellan tech support I think I’ve got the hang of it.

I bought the XL because I’m familiar with magellan yada, yada and the fact that I bought one for $329,yeah baby! I fried my old meridian gps , I started my car with the unit on, next thing I saw was a blank screen.

The size of the screen says it all, its huge! When installed correctly the Mapsend DirectRoute works perfectly,

Turn by Turn and audible warnings work like they should, maps are detailed. I recommend this unit for those who have some patience and know how to follow directions, With the SD cards I’ll be able to have all the maps of North America,I just need to buy the new 2gigers. I was able to buy this gps, 3yr extended warranty and Mapsend DirectRoute for about $466, thats a little more than the Garmin unit alone.

I’m not to impressed with the base maps I figured 30megs was enough for more detail. I also encountered some download issues (Mapsend DirectRoute). You can’t use the Mapsend software to d/l maps, you have put the maps in your hardrive then use the Installation Wizard to transfer the maps, whew! No more plug and play with this one , very unMeridian like. I think there should be another illumination setting on this unit, the mid setting, lights up the inside of my car. I also haven’t seen any accessories yet, my battery supply is running thin, C’mon Magellan lets move on this ok!
