Must have Toy for under $100
If you are an avid skier, mountain biker, hiker, mountaineer, boater, or you have a tendency to get lost going to the supermarket, this is the gadget for you.
The eTrex is small, light weight, and almost indestructible. Easy to use and very, very fun.
I had the chance to demo this product while vacationing in Sun Valley recently and had a blast with the tracking feature that showed all the ski runs I skied all day. Plus to see all the miles I could do in a day was very cool. The most impressive feature to me is the “Track Back” feature. With this one, it will walk you back through the trail that you have just completed or one that you have saved before. This would be a great feature on a trail at night, or in dense fog. It will literally tell you to turn when it is time.
It is very easy to set marking points called waypoints at your favorite campsite, condo, or to mark where you parked your car. I found it very easy to operate the 4 screens and to set waypoints. The interface takes only minutes to figure out.
With 12 channels for tracking satellites I had no problem with the signal, although I have heard it can be more difficult in thick woods. I also used this in downtown Portland and had no problems in and around the tall buildings. ETrex was able to acquire satellites in about 30 sec. And it was accurate to 12 feet.
This device does not have the capabilities to download maps off the Internet but with some of the great GPS software out there you can down load waypoints or trails and use them to guide you.
I highly recommend this for anybody that wants to know where they are. If you can get it for under $100 it”s a deal.
