The Garmin iQue M5 is a PDA with the added feature of a GPS. Garmin maps are great as usual and are the best feature of this little device. With all the functionality of a Pocket PC (outlook for mail, contacts, tasks, mp3 player, etc) this should be a great little device. It handily fit in my shirt pocket with the GPS antenna out (taller people may not be able to get away with this) and I could easily hear it without the amplification speaker that plugs into the cigarette lighter (comes with). This device loses most of it’s usefulness without the additional SD RAM though. Unless you’re traveling in a very small area you need the SD RAM to hold anything more than a very small area (I got a 2GB card so I could hold the US and not worry about where I was going).

I was sorely disappointed though when trying to use it to find things. When trying to do a find directly or through my contacts list (requires a couple steps), I found that the system would completely stall out. Sometimes just 30 seconds, sometimes minutes and on occasion requiring the use of the reset button. This can be VERY distressing if you’re headed somewhere and just want to find something near the route or location (this doesn’t happen on the 2720 my wife has). Also, the system seemed to lose track of my route on occasion. I can’t tell you how many times on a single trip that was 35 miles I heard “off route recalculating”. What’s worse is I was traveling in a straight line.

I bought this ultimately for use when traveling in Europe. With the problems it had, I decided to return it and just buy the maps for my wife’s 2720. It’s a great idea, but the system is either buggy or the processor is underpowered (I suspect the latter).
