I recently purchased a Garmin Nuvi 350 for $388 at Walmart. Next best available price locally was $499 at Best Buy, though I saw it for $638 at a local sport outfitters store.
It is very light and easily transportable. It will take a fix under most conditions, even inside a house with the proper window access. It fits in a pocket with at least a four hour battery charge, which makes it useful for leaving the car park and navigating on foot to a limited extent.
I found it to be very easy user and user intuitive and is usable right out of the box. It will allow you to search an address using two alternatives: the fastest routing and the shortest routing. I used the shortest routing through central Virginia using some minor towns as waypoints. This led to some interesting though spotty routing directions on some very obscure roads. I found rural and suburban routing fairly accurate, though routing through heavily built up areas in Northern Virginia and Washington DC was quite error prone (I assume this is due to rapid road construction and modifications.)
I would give this unit 4 stars except for the supplied dashboard/windshield mount. It would not keep the unit mounted for more than 20 minutes without falling off, usually in heavy traffic. Just when I needed it most, it would fall off the windshield and lodge itself on the floor either under the accelerator petal or worse, the brake. That alone makes it rather dangerous, in my opinion.
There’s a lot to like in this unit, but if you want to use it in a moving vehicle, forget the poorly designed mount and consider a roll of duct tape a required operational accessory!
