Beware - this unit broke the third time - Garmin StreetPilot® c320 Car GPS Receiver I bought the garmin c320 after doing extensive on-line research, thinking it was the perfect unit for a first time...

I’ve had this unit on loan for only a few hours, and already feel it’s worth writing a review. Having used the Garmin StreetPilot 3 for around 4 years now, I’m looking at newer replacements. Having looked at all the competition, I’m convinced the Garmin units are far superior for in car navigation (Magellan for walking).

The screen is smaller than the StreetPilot, but still big enough for navigation. The screen on the Garmin Quest (cheaper model) is definitely too small.

The unit is simplicity itself. It has only a volume knob and power button, everything else is touchscreen. Inputting destinations is easy and even those not used to GPS’s will find using the unit fairly self explanatory and easy to get to grips with.

Though it only comes with 128MB memory, it is a removable SD card (unlike the C330 which has fixed internal memory). Battery life is good at around 8 hours, although it uses an internal Li-Ion rechargeable battery (doesn’t appear to be user replaceable).

It connects to the car through a 12v cigarette lighter attachment, which is small and thin (so will fit in the recessed lighter sockets you get in some cars) and the speaker is built into the GPS and not the cable (big advantage over the StreetPilot). As the unit is so light (small too), it attaches to the car via a windscreen suction mount which works well.

The final main advantage over earlier models is the speed increase - routing data is now so much faster than in earlier GPS units.

All in all, it’s an ideal unit for the majority of the people. It apparently lacks some features of the StreetPilot range, but I have yet to find anything critical it doesn’t have.
