This is my third Handheld GPS unit. My first comparison is a General Electric junker that couldn’t lock onto a satellite if it was sitting on top of it. The second is the Magellan Sportrak. Of the three, the Magellan Explorist 300 is the best overall product.
I’ve used both the Magellan products extensively in southwestern Ontario, the Caribbean, and Florida. In forests, stormy weather, from inside cars, airplanes, and in open sky. The Explorist 300 consistently provides a more accurate coordinate reading than the Sportrak. It never fails to lock onto at least 4 satellites, usually more, and is generally WAAS-functional.
Although you’ll probably find that you don’t need it, I think Magellan should have provided a pc-link on this unit, especially when you consider that my cheaper Sportrak offered linking capability. The ability to upload local trail maps, or detailed area maps, would have been a worthy bonus.
I liked the user-interface better on the Sportrak, although I know some people would disagree. Explorist buttons are smaller, menu system slightly less user-friendly. But both are adequately functional.
Batteries burn out faster in the Explorist, and the battery cover screw is countersunk and nearly impossible to open without the use of a screwdriver. If you spring for lithium rechargables, you’ll find that battery consumption instantly becomes a non-issue.
While I admit there are limitations to the product’s design features and capabilities, you have to remember that this is an affordable entry level product. For me, the most important thing is that my GPS turns on, finds satellites, and provides positioning, which this model does reliably. All additional functions are relatively unimportant.
It’s a good buy for the money.
