I bought my eTrex in 2000 and it is still going strong. The built-in features give you good navigation tools with a simple easy-to-learn interface. I wanted a good GPS unit with out all the bells and whistles and the eTrex has lived up to that expectation. This is a good GPS unit for the beginner or the expert.

When I need the extras, I plug my eTrex into my PC or PDA and get on-the-fly maps with MS Streets and Trips. I also use it with EasyGPS, a free PC app for Geocaching. Cetus GPS provides a free PDA app. These apps illustrate the fact that you don’t need a GPS unit with everything “on board” when you can attach it to your laptop or PDA and run exactly the software you need.

The eTrex features a “bread crumb trail” that shows your recent route, but will also allow you to mark and save waypoints for point-to-point navigation. It has a GUI (Graphical User Interface) that is very user-friendly. The eTrex gets decent reception indoors or in the car if it is near a window.

The only thing I would complain about is Garmin’s prices for data/power cables. They are modestly expensive, but you CAN buy them for much cheaper from 3rd party suppliers.
