I have to start by saying: I LOVE THIS GPS UNIT!
I have been driving from the U.S to Canada, back and forth, many
times a month for the last little while, and this device has been
with me all of the way.
It has very accurate highway information, like what kind of gas station
you’ll find up ahead and whether it sells Diesel, etc., what the
exit numbers are, where rest areas are. It will keep track of your
path travelled, will tell you your bearing, avg. speed, max speed,
time good, and even altitude. Oh yeah, and of course it will give
you your latitude and longitude!
There’s so many things it will track that I can’t remember them and
I haven’t even used half of them.
Recently, I took my Garmin on a DC-10 with me…Boy did I have
a fun time! Accurate altitude, speed, max speed…and I could even see
the path we were travelling on the base map! Flying is just
so much more fun when you know exactly where you are! What’s
even more impressive is that currently most commercial airlines
don’t use GPS technology for navigation…so with the GARMIN you’re
more advanced.
This final point is important since this is the reason that the
US government lifted their degradation on GPS. Commercial aviation is
moving to GPS technologies and the government was basically required to
lift it’s degradation on the GPS signal. What does that mean to
you and me? Well, it means that this GPS unit (and all others) have
an instant increase in accuracy…of up to 10 times! So you can
basically have your location down to a few feet.
Another advantage of the GPS III+ is that it works (kinda) with
Garmin’s mapsource CDs. These CDs provide detailed map information
which (theoretically) can be uploaded to some Garmin GPSs.
One of the reasons that I opted for the GPS III+ was because of this
functionality and when I bought my device, Garmin’s web page claimed
that I could use Mapsource CDs with it.
Well, that proved to be partly true. You see, the GPS III+ has
too little memory to handle most of the map information that you
would want to load into it. I wanted to load the map info for
New York City, but the CD would only allow a predefined section which
required twice the memory requirements of the device.
This is disheartening, especially since the MApsource CDs cost over $100 US. This applied with both the Roads & Recreation and the MEtroguide USA
CDs. For the Worldmap CD, there seems to be more flexibility and
I can load country information, however the amount of detail for
Worldmap doesn’t compare to the US CDs.
Turns out that just recenlty, Garmin updated their website and now
clarify this point and that the full maps on some CDs are not compatible
with the GPS III+.
In summary: It’s a great device and I simply love it. But, I would
LOVE it even more if it had more memory or if I could add more memory!
