This was my second GPS. I also have had the Magellan 2000 series car navigator. I bought this one because a friend had just purchased one and I was impressed with the features.

This is the most intuitive and easy to use GPS device I’ve owned. It’s ready to go right outside the box. Unlike the Magellan, there is no need to initialize the unit with a computer before using it. It’s very light and compact as well; and easy to read from the drivers’ seat of my car.

It synced up with the satellites in under one minute and also tracks nicely with three (3) different graphic view modes. Each mode also alows you to pick seperate color schemes.

You can also go to the tomtom website and sign up with “My Tomtom” to get other great free updates on maps and navigation voices. The suction cup holder attaches easily to the windshield and sticks on it with no issues. It also has an adaptor for dash mounting as well.

The Points of Interest Feature (POI) is also very comprehensive and easy to find places to go “on the fly”. I particularly like the “day or night view” feature for driving at different times. The high resolution screen was about 3″ and, for me, the perfect size. I could easily put this device in my glove box.

This little unit is also expandable. You can purchase a separate antennae to get real time traffic updates. You can also purchase other maps to download from the website.

You can pick a directional voice either male or female with three different accents and also in different foreign languages: US/American, English, or French. You have to download all of the free English or French voices. Also avaliable for an additional fee are certain celebrity voices ( a bit pricey for my taste, 4 pounds–do the conversion yourself to US currency).

Strangely enough, the unit utilizes the British Pound when referring to currency and also uses the term “Petrol Station” instead of the American “Gas Station”.

I did put this unit through the paces but changing my route. Interestingly enough, it picked the exact alternate route I would have chose on my own. It almost seemed like it “knew” my neighborhood and town.

I’ve heard Tomtom was the best in car GPS before, and I now I know it’s true.
