I bought this TomTom to replace a broken Mio DigiWalker. I decided to go with TomTom because of the brand name being so popular among GPS users. I still have not decided which one I like better. There are a lot of differences between the two, both good and bad. (My Mio was a Digiwalker 310x) So we will get the bad out of the way first.
There are not enough points of interest. There are some places that I just do not understand why anyone would care that they are there and other places that people would want to know about are not found. Example the mall in town can be found as a point of interest but A.C. Moore, Aspen Dental, and Dollar Tree (located in a plaza or strip mall in the lot next to the mall) cannot be found. Staples can be found as a point of interest but the Just A Buck and MAB paints that are in the same plaza are not listed. If I am unable to find POI in the town where I live and know where they are, how will I find them when I go on vacation to a new town?
TomTom also does not always give the fastest or the shortest route when you ask for it. It has directed me to go about 5 miles out of my way when asked for the shortest route. When asked for the fastest route it has taken me a route that was 10 minutes longer than a route that I know.
Also when you plan a route you can only add a start, finish, and one via point. My Mio let me add many via points. This is a pain if you are going somewhere and want to stop for gas and stop to visit a friend along the way before reaching your final destination.
There are many pros to the TomTom. It is easy to navigate through the user controls. You can easily pick a destination and navigate to it. It is easy to change the preferences and there are a lot of preferences to change to your liking.
TomTom is easy to install in the car and easy to move around. My Mio was a pain in the neck to adjust. With the TomTom, all I have to do is grap it and move it the way I want it to go.
TomTom is easy to understand and gives direction for your next turn as well as the turn after that. It is nice to kind of be prepared for what is coming up next.
If you are following a route and take a wrong turn, TomTom automatically re-routes you. My Mio used to ask if I wanted to recalculate my route and most times it would just tell me to turn around anyway. TomTom is also quick at coming up with a new route.
I also like TomToms map share feature, which allows you to make corrections to the map and then upload them to TomToms website. You can also choose to download corrections from other users. You can make changes to streets, add missing streets, and make changes to or add POIs. Mio did not offer anything like this.
TomTom is easy to connect to the computer and the interface is easy to use. You can download all kinds of updates easily. You can download different for the spoken directions. They have all kinds of voices that make it fun to listen to. They also have a variety of color schemes to choose from so you can change the map colors to your style. My Mio did not offer any of this.
It is easy to get updates for TomTom. Just plug it in and follow the directions on the screen. You can update POIs, maps, & get GPS fixes .My Mio again did not offer updates, at least none that were easy to get to.
I have owned TomTom for about a month now and it has worked so far. This is the perfect GPS for someone looking for just the basic navigation unit.
