This is my first GPS and I have been using it for about 4 months now, both with and without MetroGuide USA installed. Most of my use has been in my car.

First, I have been very happy with this unit. I have found it to work quite reliably, with good battery life in battery saver mode (about 18 hours with 1 second updates), and good accuracy.

The base map on this unit is of variable in quality. For example, I was surprised at the level of detail where I live - not total by any means, but all the major streets. I than went to my parents and there was hardly a map for the same size streets. It is good on the highway (services available at offramps information is quite cool), and does serve a useful purpose in getting generally oriented. Unfortunately, the lock on road feature does not appear to work on the basemap and the maps aren’t all the accurate (e.g. you appear to be driving off the road at times).

The MetroGuide USA map is quite detailed, but I can see that the maps may be as much as 4 years old. I live in a relatively new area and there are quite a few holes in the map. On the other hand, where there is detail, it is complete - freeway offramps are completely shown, etc. … But realize that this unit will not guide you to your destination - it will only show where you are and the direction you are moving.

Actual use of the unit is reasonably straight forward after reading the manual - but there is a lot of stuff in this unit.

I disagree that it is not useful in a car, I got a windshield mount which puts the unit within a foot of my face and it is usable. The display resolution is quite fine. A color display would help though.

I have found that the unit does hold its lock quite well, although high buildings can obstruct it.

If you are going to load mapsource maps into the unit, realize that it is via a serial port. If you only have usb ports on your computer, you will have to buy a serial - usb adaper cable. I purchased a Belkin one and it works fine. Data transfer is slow though.

In regards to available memory for mapsource maps - more memory is better. I live in the Los Angeles metropolitan area which would probably require 16 - 24 megabytes to fully load. I would think for hiking, 8 megabytes is ample. In my case, I purchased the Legend over the top model as it was far far cheaper. It wouldn’t have been worth the extra cost for me.
